Count the number of cubes you can see systematically.

Method 1:
Looking from the front: 4; The back: 4, The left: 3, The right: 3, The top: 4,  The bottom: 4;
The number of the cube's surfaces are 4 x 2 + 3 x 2 + 4 x 2 = 22 square inches

Method 2:
Surfaces by cube: The four visible cubes have 5 surfaces each. The cube in the back has 2 surfaces.
The number of cube surfaces are 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 2 = 22 square inches
