           a) 128 square inches

           b) 16 square inches

 

Solution:

Draw lines PN and MO. You can see that the area of square MNOP is half of the area of ABCD. The area of square MNOP is 8 x 8 = 64 square inches;

The area of ABCD = 2 x 64 = 128 square inches

The area of AMP is one quarter of the area of MNOP.  So the area of AMP = 64/4=16 square inches
